Holiday Cards

The design and printing of holiday cards has become an annual tradition at Bankes Design. The theme of each year's card is usually based on a quote of interest. Production methods vary from year to year — screen printing, hand dyed cut paper, linocut, and digital printing — with editions that range from a single copy to up to seventy prints depending on the printing process.

2022

Winter is coming. Featuring a luminous snowflake emitting warmth and light in the coldness of winter. Custom letterforms created and set in german with english translation. Digitally printed on Mowhawk Superfine and enclosed in an orange or blue envelope.

2020

Featuring the 1978 quote from Buckminster Fuller, Nature is trying very hard to make us succeed, but nature does not depend on us. We are not the only experiment. Digitally printed on Mowhawk Superfine.

2016

Linocut, printed in an edition of 30 on Arches 100% cotton hot pressed 140# watercolor paper. First experience working with waterbased inks, printed four spot colors; pms 206, pms 710, pms 7625, and pms 7646.

2015

A playful study of snowflakes and includes an abstracted evergreen tree — that has made appearances on previous cards, in various forms — which has developed into an informal mark over the years. When it became obvious that there wasn’t enough the time complete the screen printing, digital printing became the only option to get the cards completed in time for mailiing

2005

Based on an excerpt from the David Sedaris short story SantaLand Diaries. The card is designed with an accordion fold and is wrapped in a slip cover sleeve. This was my first attempt at screen printing with four color process inks, which required the use of a course screen — 45lpi. Printed on a coated sheet — Scheufelen Consort Royal silk 80# cover — in cyan, magenta, yellow, black, pro blue, pearlescent blue, and a dull varnish.

2004

Planned to be executed by way of paste-up and process camera — including film copy work in the dark room — mechanical failure eliminated the option. Film positives were ultimately produced by imagesetter, hand stripped together — along with the use of rubies. Screen printed on Monadnock Astrolite 80# cover and printed in 6 spot colors — black, green, flesh, pink, transparent pearl, and pearlescent blue.

2002

The first in the holiday card series, based on a quote from John Keats — O for a life of Sensations rather than of Thoughts! — screen printed in black, silver, and a custom pearlescent blue on Monadnock Astrolite 80# cover.
